Gypsum During Salt Stress and as a Soil Improver

TourTurf® CSG Calcium Sulphate Granule is a sustainable product made from 95 % recycled, circular material. CSG improves the soil structure, increases rooting depth, and enhances watering efficiency. It stimulates soil biology, reducing thatch and improving water infiltration. Root depth is improved as the calcium and sulphur in CSG work down into the soil profile, creating more pore space and allowing nutrients to penetrate the rootzone.

TourTurf® CSG Calcium Sulphate Granules can be used in a program to remove sodium and bicarbonates from the soil profile. As calcium has a greater binding potential to soil particles than sodium, it can replace the sodium ions attached to soil particles. CSG is a finely ground, pure gypsum micro-granule. The granules rapidly dissolve into the soil profile when watered in and deliver a high level of calcium, sulphur and magnesium to the soil.

Products containing Calcium can help to bind and remove sodium cations. Gypsum in TourTurf® CSG Calcium Sulphate Granules will react quickly with sodium to form sodium sulphate that can be flushed out of the soil profile. Calcium in gypsum can displace Sodium and form the leachable sulphate salt Na2SO4. If you use gypsum, you don’t expect to change the soil pH.

To supply large amounts of calcium as a plant nutrient and to raise the pH slightly, use lime.

In Agriculture, Gypsum has been used for many years to improve the structure and drainage of the soil. Calcium will aid to give structure to the soil, it stimulates flocculation, improving air and water movement, especially on push-up greens, and fairways with heavy soil.

Gypsum harmonises the cation ratios of the soil. If magnesium (Mg) accounts for more than 15% of the cation exchange capacity, the structure suffers on very heavy clay fairways. Gypsum fertilisation can displace excess Mg. The free binding sites are then occupied by Ca. This improves the soil structure.

Benefits:
  • Reduces salt stress
  • Improves seed germination
  • Improves soil structure
  • Stops water run-off and erosion
  • Improves water-use efficiency
  • Makes it possible to use low-quality irrigation water
  • Decreases heavy metal toxicity
